• The Tasmanian planning system is a subset of the Resource Management and Planning System (RMPS).
  • There is a hierarchy of plans.
  • There are separate approval processes for different sizes and scales of development.
  • The planning system does not duplicate existing assessment processes in other Acts.

The Tasmanian planning system is a system of processes and rules that help shape the places where we work, live and play. It provides a way to decide where, when and what land uses and developments can occur. It also includes strategic planning, which aims to ensure the existing and future needs of our communities are met. Some land uses and developments are excluded because these are governed by other legislation and state agencies.
